Marian University's Department of Music Presents the 17th Annual Catholic High School Choral Festival on Thursday, November 29 - 11/21/2012

On Thursday, November 29, the Marian University Department of Music presents, the 17th annual Catholic High School Choral Festival at 7:30 p.m. in the Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel on campus.

Marian University Sacred Choir

The festival will feature eight Indianapolis Catholic High School choirs, including: Bishop Chatard High School, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, Cardinal Ritter High School, Cathedral High School, Father Thomas Scecina Memorial High School, Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception, Roncalli High School, and St. Theodore Guerin High School. Marian University’s Chamber Singers, Sacred Choir, and Show Choir will also participate.

The concert will include Christmas classics like, “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “White Christmas,” as well as more contemporary selections including, "Mary Did You Know?” and “What Child Shall Come?”

Phil Kern, M.F.A., acting chair of the Department of Music and associate professor of music, started the festival in 1995 as a way to engage the Catholic high school choral community in central Indiana.

“We realized there was no event where students could come together in fellowship and song, so a choral festival was an ideal solution. It has grown into a beloved annual event that showcases Marian University to the many students in the surrounding high schools who might be considering Marian University as their choice for higher education,” Kern said.

The concert will begin with a processional song performed by all of the choirs participating and the audience. This year’s piece, “Mary Had a Baby (Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee),” was arranged by Kern and will be published by Hal Leonard Publishing next year with a dedication to the participants in this year’s festival.

The event is free; however, donations will be accepted for the Holy Family Shelter.

Music Education at Marian University

“Music Education for the Heart, Mind, and Soul” is the motto of the Department of Music at Marian University. Educating the next generation of choir and band directors is our primary goal. We have been working closely with the School of Education to develop innovative ideas about how much to prepare our future teachers so that they will become music educators who will effectively teach and inspire their students.

Our focus is on the real-world skills that music teachers need in the classroom and we provide opportunities for the practical application of these skills. Marian University is the only university in the Indianapolis area that offers both marching band and show choir.

As a Catholic university, we also have a third unique area of concentration, liturgical music. We offer a degree in pastoral music ministry where we prepare students to become music ministers at parishes and churches. Our Sacred Choir is the primary ensemble for our pastoral music ministry students to gain necessary practice and experience in liturgical music.

Our marching band, show choir, and sacred choir become the daily training ground for our future music educators. By the time they graduate, our students are well prepared for the real world—because they’ve been living and working in it since they arrived on campus at Marian University.
