Sixth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Chemistry on April 20 - 4/20/2010

Nine Marian University students will present their original research on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in Marian Hall Room 355. The research projects were conducted as a part of the students' coursework or internship; nearly all of the presentations satisfy some research requirement in CHE 360 / 380 / 498. The schedule follows.
 
Morning Session
9 a.m Kelly Fairchild
Cornea Research Foundation of America: Chemistry Internship
Project sponsored by Cornea Research Foundation for Price Vision; in conjunction with Dr. Carl Lecher.
 
9:30 a.m. Jill Menegotto and Amanda Tutrow
Computational Studies of Creatine, Creatinine, and Creatine Ethyl Ester
Students challenge a published computational study in conjunction with Dr. Rod Macrae. Original research performed in the new computation chemistry class.
 
9:50 a.m. Ryan Strom
Algae: The Green Answer
Project seeks to develop a new chemistry lab in the creation of sustainable bio-fuels from algae; in conjunction with Dr. Carl Lecher.
 
10:20 a.m. Jill Tonetti
Biochemistry Involved in Interpretation of Environmental Cues Leading to Reproduction in Vertebrates
Project builds upon previous work of the O’Brien research group; in conjunction with Dr. Sarah O’Brien.

Photo-induced Reaction between Eosin Y and DODCI: A Model System for the Photodynamic Effect
Project builds upon previous work performed in the Macrae research group; in conjunction with Dr. Rod Macrae.

Hydrogen-bonded Clusters: Structures and Vibrational Spectrum
Original research performed in the new computation chemistry class; in conjunction with Dr. Rod Macrae.
 
2:50 p.m. Davin Rose
High Symmetry Carbon Clusters and Cages
Original research performed in the new computation chemistry class; in conjunction with Dr. Rod Macrae.

Reuse of Phase Transfer Catalyst in the Environmentally Benign Synthesis of Adipic Acid
Project builds upon previous work of the Lecher research group; in conjunction with Dr. Carl Lecher.
 
3:40 p.m. Kelly Fairchild
Biodiesel Synthesis in a Domestic Microwave
Project seeks to develop a new, green high school chemistry experiment; in conjunction with Dr. Carl Lecher.
