Robert Schuttler - A professor's approach to Harlaxton College - 9/4/2009

Harlaxton College Students The highlight of my teaching career came when I was asked to be a professor in the Contemporary European Business Issues class. To be quite honest, I had many of the same questions that a student would. I had never team-taught a class, taught at Harlaxton, or taught in a 10-day intensive program before. As you can see, it was a new experience for me as well as the students.

Contemporary European Business Issues is a class in the curriculum of the University of Evansville, which owns Harlaxton College. The course was designed many years ago by Dr. Bob Clark, dean of the Schroeder Family School of Business. The course is presented in a seminar format, with class sessions consisting of presentations by the visiting professors on topics of interest in the United Kingdom and Europe. The sessions were informative in nature and designed to provide a foundation of information on which the class is built.

I felt honored to be in a distinguished group of professors who represented Harlaxton College, two from Marian University and five from the University of Evansville. Classes were conducted in a traditional presentation format and included the following topics:

  • The monetary system of the UK
  • Marketing in a global economy
  • The church in England
  • Field trip briefings
  • Employment in the UK and Europe
  • Gross Domestic Product of the UK and Europe
  • Being an expatriate working abroad and more

There were no tests, evaluations, outside reading assignments, or text review; however there were many field exercises and a group project. The field exercises consisted of a series of excursions into the towns and cities of the English countryside. The towns and cities included Grantham, Lincoln, York, Birmingham, and Nottingham. Each visit provided the student with the freedom to explore, feel the culture, and discover the unique characteristics of each destination.

The main academic exercise of the course was team-driven research and a presentation of a company engaged in a global strategy. The four-person team researched the company, reviewed the industry, identified a product, and considered an international target market. A formal presentation was made to the group of peers and professors addressing the issues above and a question and answer period followed. Students received a grade for the depth and quality of their research and the effectiveness of the presentation. This was the first time this course had been “blended” in the special manner of including traditional college students with the adult learners.
