Spotlight on Carol-Ann Marbach - 3/16/2010

Carol-Ann Marbach

In January, Carol-Ann Marbach, a December 2009 MAP graduate, phoned to say that her Marian University degree had already resulted in a promotion from projects assistant to treasury specialist at Eli Lilly. Said Marbach, “I still would have been eligible to apply for the job, but I know that they were impressed with the fact I had earned my degree by going to school nights while working full time.”

Marbach is a living testimony to sticking with a dream. In 1972, she enrolled in the Community College of Philadelphia full time. At the end of her first year of college, she married and continued going to school part-time while raising her family. Says Marbach, “Once my children were grown and out of school, some 30 years and 50+ credits later, I entered the accelerated program at Holy Family University in Philadelphia.” By the time she moved to Indiana five years ago when her employer redistributed jobs, Marbach had accumulated a total of 61 credit hours.

When asked why she chose Marian’s Adult Programs Marbach replied, “I looked at several schools when I moved here, but Marian University provided the best curriculum and suited my needs perfectly.” Marbach continued, “I was never disappointed in my decision. I am a cradle Catholic but I learned more about religion in my Marian University theology and philosophy classes than I ever did in 12 years of Catholic school.”

On December 17, 2009, I turned 60 years old, just 10 days after completing my final class and earning my bachelor’s degree,” said Marbach. When asked what she might say to other adults who might be struggling to balance family, career, and school, she replied, “I would say if you really want it, you can have it. Attending classes does so much for your outlook on life, your self-esteem and definitely helps you advance in your career. Hang in there!”
