MAP Welcomes Larry Motes Home from Afghanistan - 10/1/2010

Larry MotesAfter a year of active duty with the United States Army in Afghanistan, MAP is happy to welcome back Larry Motes! Motes wasted no time contacting his advisor at the Keystone MAP office less than one week after his discharge to make arrangements to be readmitted and back on his way to earning his business degree. When asked why he didn’t give himself a break between the pressures of active service and school, Motes said it simply boiled down to one word—graduation. "I am just so set on graduating that I feel starting back right away was the right thing for me to do."

Although a year out of the classroom might have temporarily slowed his academic progress, Motes noted there was much to be learned from the assignment. "I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything. I am who I am today because of what I have done. I got to know Afghanistan up front, in and around the local population. The best thing I can remember about being deployed is interacting with the public", said Motes. "Whether it was Kosovo or Afghanistan, for the most part everyone was friendly and receptive, especially the children."

Motes and his wife and "best friend", Kristen, live in Noblesville and just welcomed their first child, Ainsley Elizabeth, into the family. According to Motes, concentrating in human resources management in his bachelor’s degree will help launch a new career path and be the foundation for earning an M.B.A. later, another of his goals.
