Spotlight on David Collins - 1/13/2011

David CollinsDavid Collins’ story is one of determination and focus. He always knew that he wanted to obtain a college degree, so when a friend suggested Marian University, he decided to check it out. During his time in MAP, he had to create balance between home, work, and school. According to Collins, "Marian University was able to work around my schedule, and it is a great university. My wife, son, mom, co-workers, family, and friends have been a great support team!" Collins was able to see all of his hard work pay off when he received his diploma in December 2010.

Last spring, his place of employment was heavily damaged by fire the night before a new MAP term started. This caused Collins to forgo his coursework for a short period of time. "While we were waiting on the insurance company and permits to rebuild, I had some free time," explained Collins. "So I doubled up every term thereafter. In late July, I jokingly told my wife, Christie, that I would see her at Christmas. She was getting ready to return to teaching, and I was getting ready for the rebuild. Also, from July to December, I had class three nights a week. I just knew I had to stay focused on the task at hand."

According to Collins, "The degree alone was my biggest goal. The professors and administrators have been great. There were a lot of real-life learning experiences, not just textbook lectures." He believes this component is critical when receiving an education. Now that he has earned his degree, Collins has even bigger plans on the horizon. Besides having more free time to spend with his family, he is planning to start his own business and preparing for an addition to their family. David and Christie are awaiting the arrival of a sibling for their son, David, in May.
