Marian University Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Receives Ace of the ACE Award - 11/16/2011

The Marian University chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) received a surprise on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the education honor society’s biennial convocation: its members received the Ace of the ACE Award for outstanding programming in support of KDP’s mission. The chapter was one of 24 that expected to receive one of the ACE awards, but the members in attendance didn’t realize they would be named the Ace of the ACE until the closing banquet. KDP has a total of 582 active chapters around the world. The Ace of the ACE Award has been awarded six times in KDP’s history.

“Marian University’s education majors are exceptional students. Receiving the Ace of the ACE Award confirms that we are exemplary in upholding the ideals of KDP, one of which is improving education for global citizenship,” said Susie Beesley, professor of education at Marian University and the campus chapter’s faculty liaison. In order to join the chapter, undergraduate students must have a 3.00 GPA and graduate students must have a 3.25 GPA. “KDP takes seriously its mission to promote excellence and advance scholarship, leadership, and service. It has a history of finding and keeping the best and brightest in the field of education,” Beesley continued.
Marian University’s chapter, Alpha Alpha Tau, was installed on campus in 2002. In its short history, the chapter has received the ACE award four times. The Alpha Alpha Tau chapter is active on Marian University’s campus, generally hosting 8-10 events each semester. The group provides professional development opportunities for educators including mock interviews, panel presentations, and workshops, and is also involved with service to the university and community. Each year since its inception, the chapter has worked with the Literacy Alive program buying books for several area schools and providing instruction. Chapter members tutor students and serve as pen pals to promote communication. On campus, KDP members serve the School of Education by providing Phase 1 portfolio help sessions and participating as student liaisons in the developmental advising meetings.
During this year’s KDP convocation, Christina Zier ’11 was recognized as a Distinguished Chapter Officer. Maria Cossell ’09 was recognized as a Distinguished Chapter Officer at the 2009 convocation held in Orlando, Florida. Accepting the ACE award for the university were chapter president Amy Garner and vice president Amber Owens. The university chapter has 54 current members.
Founded in 1911, KDP is an international organization with over 45,000 members. Noteworthy members include Albert Einstein, George Washington Carver, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Margaret Mead. Current renowned members include Barbara Morgan, Alfie Kohn, Lisa Delpit, Andy Hargreaves, James Banks, and Howard Gardner. To date, more than 1,200,000 educators worldwide have been inducted into this international honor society.
