State Board of Education to Hear Progress Update for Marian University Academy for Teaching and Learning Leadership - 11/24/2010

Dr. Lindan Hill, Dr. Tony Bennett, President Daniel J. ElsenerDr. Lindan Hill, the dean of the School of Education and director of the Marian University Academy for Teaching and Learning Leadership, has been invited to attend the December 1, 2010, meeting of the Indiana State Board of Education to provide an update on the university’s Academy for Teaching and Learning Leadership. The academy is in its first year of operation. In August of 2010, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) awarded a $500,000 Title II grant to the university to establish a Turnaround Leadership Academy to identify, recruit, train, and develop transformational leaders who will focus on the challenge of turning around Indiana’s chronically lowest-achieving schools.

Dr. Hill’s presentation will focus on the status of three important features of the academy:

  • Candidate selection process and enrollment (of 55 applications received, 31 were accepted for the 2010 cohort)
  • Curriculum strands and the two-year mentoring program (strands are the culture of high performance schools; literacy leadership; statistical analysis; systems thinking/authentic leadership; and teacher performance and student learning)
  • National faculty (Samuel Casey Carter, Steven Farr, Dr. Daniel Goldhaber, T. Jeffrey Hannah, E.D. Hirsch Jr., Julie Kowal, Doug Lemov, Angus McBeath, and Dr. Ian Mittroff)

The December 1, 2010, meeting of the Indiana State Board of Education is public; the agenda is available on the Indiana Department of Education web site. Public meetings are also videotaped; the videotape archive is also on the INDOE web site at www.doe.in.gov/stateboard/video.html.
