Site Selected for Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine - 6/16/2010

In January of 2010, Marian University president Daniel J. Elsener announced plans to develop a college of osteopathic medicine—the first such medical school in the state of Indiana. At that time, several locations for the facility were under consideration, including St. Francis Hospital—Beech Grove, ground near Westview Hospital on the city’s west side, and property owned by St.Vincent Hospital south of 86th Street.

The fourth site, land owned by the university at the corner of Cold Spring Road and 30th Street, was approved by the university’s Board of Trustees as the location for Marian University’s college of osteopathic medicine (MU-COM).

Yesterday, a construction sign was placed on the site.

There are several reasons why the on-campus site makes sense for the university.

First, it supports the future growth and enhancement of Marian University’s academic programs, including planned graduate programs in nursing, science, and business.

It will be a catalyst for future growth in this area of Indianapolis and will complement the bioscience corridor being developed along 16th Street.

And, it is on property already owned by the university, which makes it an efficient and cost-effective option.

Indianapolis architectural firm Schmidt Associates is the lead architect for this project. The building and site plan are still in the design phase. At this time, information is not available about the square footage, number of stories, external design of the building, or construction costs. The university expects this to be available by the end of July. The rendering on the construction sign placed at 30th Street and Cold Spring Road is a preliminary, conceptual rendering.
