Students Take Fourth in American Advertising Federation Competition - 4/29/2010

Marian University’s team of student advertising executives took fourth place in Division 6 of the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition on April 23 in Detroit, Michigan. Each year, a corporate sponsor provides an assignment or case study outlining the history of its product and current advertising situation; this year the sponsor was State Farm. The case study is always candid and reflects a real world situation. Students must research the product and its competition, identify potential problem areas, and devise a completely integrated communications campaign for the client. Each student team then "pitches" its campaign to a panel of judges. Presenting a multi-faceted campaign designed to reach young, first-time insurance buyers, the team emphasized both traditional and non-traditional media, with a 3D theme in its approach. The campaign included an original rap song written by student Gene Witchger and performed by Witchger and fellow student Alfredo Turrubiates. The judges praised the team for its “creative, out-of-the-box thinking” and noted the professional quality of the presentation.

AdCompetitionTeamThe regional event for District 6 (Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan) was the first time a team from Marian University has competed. Marian University’s team represented the smallest school among the 23 other competitors and finished ahead of larger veteran participants Indiana University, DePaul University, University of Southern Indiana, and Central Michigan University. Butler University finished first, with veteran participants Ball State University and Grand Valley State University in Michigan taking second and third, respectively.

Lori Rumreich, assistant professor of marketing at Marian University and the team’s coach, noted that the students’ accomplishment was significant. “We achieved in a one-semester class what takes some teams an entire year to pull together,” she said. “That is some measure of the work ethic and determination they have, individually and as a group.”
