Denis Ryan Kelly, Sr., M.A., and longtime associate professor of philosophy at Marian College, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2009.
Kelly taught logic and eastern philosophy and religion courses at Marian College for more than 40 years and had recently announced plans to retire at the end of the spring semester. As the senior ranking member of the faculty, he had the privilege of leading the faculty processional at the start of the college’s annual commencement exercises each year.
On Saturday, Andrew Hohman, chairman of the philosophy department, commented, “A great man, our colleague and friend, Denis Kelly died this afternoon. Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.”
President Daniel J. Elsener called on the Marian College community to support Kelly’s family and each other, commenting, “Given the deep friendships, mission, and shared reverence we have for life in the Marian College community, losing Denis Ryan Kelly to this world is a shocking and painful reality. Let us stay particularly close in friendship and prayer as we deal with the terrible loss of our colleague and friend.”
