David Shumate, assistant professor of English and poet-in-residence at Marian College, recently received a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The fellowship consists of a $25,000 grant designed to encourage the production of new work. Shumate was one of 42 poets selected from 1,000 applicants from across the country. In order to apply for the fellowship, the writer must have published a book of at least 48 poems or have a strong record of publishing in journals and reviews.
In January 2008, Shumate published his second book of pose poetry, The Floating Bridge. See related article.
