Dr. Carl Lecher, a 1997 graduate of Marian College and assistant professor of chemistry for the School of Mathematics and Sciences at Marian College, was recently invited to the Gordon Research Conference on Green Chemistry. The conference will take place August 3-8, 2008, at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
An invitation to the Gordon Research Conferences is a prestigious honor for a scientist and international recognition for being a leader in their chosen field. The primary criterion for attendance at the conferences is significant scientific achievement. The conferences were initiated in the 1920s at Johns Hopkins University and are designed to promote intense discussion and examination of the most advanced aspects in the fields of biological, chemical, and physical sciences.
In particular, the upcoming Gordon Research Conference on Green Chemistry seeks to bring together scientists from industry and academia to assess the field’s progress toward greener approaches, as well as exchange ideas about designing greener chemicals and greener methods of organic synthesis, catalysis, and biocatalysis, polymers and materials, bio-inspired materials, and energy and fuels.
Dr. Lecher recognizes the upcoming conference as “an opportunity for me to encounter the latest advances in chemistry for introduction into the green chemistry research program and green organic laboratory curriculum.” He also hopes to broaden his connections with the academic and industrial green chemistry communities to expand employment and graduate school opportunities for Marian College chemistry students, as well as initiate collaborative efforts.
At Marian College, Dr. Lecher directs the green chemistry program, a multifaceted program interlinking student research with the first comprehensive green organic chemistry laboratory curriculum in the state. He also leads a collaborative effort aiding high school teachers with the incorporation of green chemistry principles experiments through workshop training and by providing teachers with educational resources.
Dr. Lecher graduated from Marian College in 1997 with bachelor of science degrees in chemistry and biology, and earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Purdue in 2003.
